Tony Robbins once said that money is like people voting with their dollars on how helpful you are. Receive a lot of it and that means a lot of people really like whatever it is you are selling.
We’ve all heard the phrase before – “Money is the root of all evil”, a phrase that is instilled at birth to us by our mothers and perpetuated further by our friends and coworkers.
For a second, let’s consider the validity of that statement. If that were true, then how is it money that is needed whenever we want to build a church? To pay our teachers? We can’t protect our country on good intentions alone can we?
In the same way you can either use a hammer to build a house or break one down, money is neither good nor evil. It’s just a tool that helps the user fulfill their desire.
The whole idea of money being evil needs to be understood.. In his book “MONEY, Master the Game”, Tony Robbins makes a great point about how money is like people voting with their dollars that what you’re selling them is something they want, therefore we can extrapolate that people buy from you for the express purpose that what you’re offering them solves some need.
Nobody buys anything that isn’t solving a need in their lives, therefore if you have money you assumedly provide solutions to people on the grandest of scales. From another point of view, in order to acquire mass wealth, you must satisfy a large amount of customers enough that they willingly buy your products and thus contribute to your wealth. Therefore you should consider the following statement –
Billionaires are the most helpful people alive.
Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part, all billionaires are only wealthy because we support them in their pursuits and thus deem them to be helpful. On that same token, it becomes apparent that in order to create wealth we must first create value and then capture some of said value.
Think about it this way – Tesla is a pursuit to solve the world’s pollution and opening the possibility for many more drivers in the world.
Before Facebook (and MySpace) we really had no platform where we could connect with as many people as we do now, staying up-to-date on all of their lives.
Going further, before Jeff Bezos created Amazon there was literally no such thing as “one day delivery”.
Upon analyzing these examples, we are forced to question our preconceived feelings that anyone who has money must be a bad person.
Looking more closely, it seems more accurate to say the exact opposite to be true, anyone with wealth must inherently be more helpful than the average person.
Most people only provide their time and think that it’s so valuable that they should continuously get raises and benefits and they fail to realize – your time is only valuable to you.
To others it’s basically the lowest bar because we have such a supply of other people willing to give their time.
This idea that other people should pay us more for our time which only benefits us alone is a sentiment shared by the majority. Needless to say, we will likely never see a world in which this school of thought comes to fruition.
